Yes.
Frances Stonor Saunders makes clear in her book that most
writers/artists had no idea that their work was funded by the CIA.
As an aside: According to Jarett Kobek's enjoyably Vonnegutesque "i hate
the internet", the CIA also created the idea of the *good novel* when it
funded the "Paris Review", the Iowa Writer's Workshop and engineered the
1958 Nobel Prize in Literature...
