In an LA Review of Books article, the brilliant Czeslaw Milosz is quoted:

"In the novels of Central Europe [1]
<https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/goodbye-eastern-europe/#_ftn1>, as
opposed to those of the West, he continued, “time is intense, spasmodic,
full of surprises, indeed practically an active participant in the story.
This is because time is associated with a danger that threatens the
existence of a national community to which the writer belongs.”

Remember how Pynchon filled the passing of time as the drumbeats of WW1
were happening in AtD. Danger....fear....within all the European
communities....
