I read the trilogy also - I read the books as they were published.   Sea of Poppies was probably my favorite but River of Smoke was next.    Very impressive,  fun,  interesting.   Book 2,  River of Smoke,  is also very good,  but not quite up to the  standard set by Book 1.  Book 3,  Flood of Fire,  almost hits it again.   Get them all!  

One thing which made my reading a bit difficult was that I had a 3-year and then a 5-year break between volumes.   Ghosh has a few chapters at the beginning of each volume to review the prior characters and events.  (Enjoy the sex scenes in volume 3 -  heh.)
