MacDonald-wise I prefer John D.
(One of my favorite authors, Charles Willeford, has written a nice essay
about him. In it he mentions a visit of him at the University of Miami as
part of a promotional tour for a movie after one of his books, Cape Fear,
when he said in the context of answering questions of the students that
"good fiction is always concerned with moral problems":
The Journalism professor, who had never read a MacDonald novel, then asked,
"What about all the sex and violence in your novels? How do you square all
that with morality?"
MacDonald rubbed his chin for a moment and smiled. "Sex and violence in
America are moral problems."
"It seems to me," the professor said, "that you're trying to have it both
ways."
"Yes." MacDonald nodded. "That's the way we have it in the United States –
both ways.")
