Howdy folks,
The most recent episode of John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" confirms my
suspicion that Orwell would have liked it.
Oliver focuses on what he calls the 3 main tactics of Trump and his fellow
travllers: Delegitimizing the Media, Whataboutism, and "Trolling". Think of
them as another turn toward Newspeak. Oliver mentions that Whataboutism (or
the Tu Quoque argument) was a common Soviet strategy during the COld War
and that its use is spreading. It all constitutes a pernicious attempt to
obfuscate issues and obviate discussion or accountability.
The Ministry of Truth is built phrase by phrase.
Oh, one of the best parts is at the beginning in which a recent Trump
speech is compared to a somewhat randomly produced cell phone text -
bizarrely similar.
