why can it not be both? I seldom doubt ANYTHING that Pynchon might not have

She answers the posing as a German--he "poses' as a German exterminator,
genocidal murderer and he poses as as lifeless as 'those German
reports"...the bureaucracy of death-dealing.....NOT any
appropriation of a German person...
