Scott's Thinking Like a State is also worth your attention. We (TRP
sometimes included) are accustomed to find the loss of Eden in cities,
finance capitalism, technology and global empires. Like Paul Shepard more
lyrically some decades ago, Scott makes the case that much of the damage
was done (or became inevitable) long before, when hunter-gatherers settled
down and became codependent with their crops.
