Absolutely stunning, in my opinion demands to be seen on as big a screen as
possible. I thought it contained veiled references to the rise of China as
the 21st century neo-Empire in waiting, but that might say more about my
world view than Hou’s.

HHH is a very intricate, at times bemusing, storyteller. Took me about
three viewings of A City of Sadness to feel I’d grasped the basic plot.
He’s one of the great living directors though. Flowers of Shanghai is
sumptuous.
