 “ heavenwide" - all over the sky they came "twinkling” (like) little lights going from bright to faint 

 “...bearing all degrees of aviator from laboratory skeptic to Jesus-rapt ascensionary…” 

The aviators ranged from serious skeptics to religious-like true believers.
