I've just read it too and I saw a different--fuller--movie than he did.
1) lots on the 'entered with good intentions' line...which in the movie is
said when the US stood next to the Vietnam leader Against French
colonialism....this line is not about America's entry...
2) I saw lots of reference to the Cold War ideology and therefore the
domino theory. He just wanted a different emphasis, I think. I think it was
there clearly as the leading rotten idea...
3) when he showed the protest movements, he was also showing the perception
of the movements, the actions.....and I think Burns got it right......one
quibble I had with Burns argues against this guy's eyes: why did he have to
repeat the exact same footage from the Dem 68 convention where the
protesters are getting beaten and taken into paddy wagons....makes THAT
look like the generalization of a too particular moment...
4) More
