In the oblique way the Academy can be political in its Nobel choices,
Remains of the Day is deeply about refusing to see fascism coming. Not to
mention love.

And The Unconsoled is the only Kafka-inspired book that I've read---not
that many though, so refute me--that goes deeper, maybe, that is, to the
full human psychological effects of the modern age. Along with Pynchon, of
course.
