 have just started reading Alfred McCoy's new book on US foreign policy; he
of the major first, almost career-destroying [by the CIA], book on the
politics of heroin in Southeast Asia....story of Cass Canfield President of
Harper & Row, being visited by an old friend (probably from Yale whose name
I will look up later) now a policy maker and enforcer in the CIA who wanted
the book killed. 'will endanger soldiers'. A lie since McCoy never went
there in his reporting. To his credit, Canfield said No and young McCoy,
26, called Sy Hersh and got the story of the attempted suppression on the
front page of the NY Times. .....Then Yale, the pod-bearing institution for
the CIA went after McCoy....he sys he was only saved because his thesis
advisor was a recent German scholar brought into Yale and not moved by old
boy pressure....
