Found out about this guy Merrell Fankhauser on the will for Inherent Vice. He sent a message to one of them after hearing that his band Fapardokly was mentioned in the New Yorker. He read Inherent Vice and was taken aback by many "cosmic" references that seemed to be referring to him. His band released the version of Wipe Out without the laugh. He was big into the sunken continent of Lemuria and went to live in the jungle on Maui where he searched and found ancient relics. His girlfriend Mary Lee lived in the same place that Pynchon apparently writes that Shasta Fay lived. He looks like a Swedish Jesus.
In an interview he said he talked to P, or his friend did, and apparently Pynchon's a big vinyl collector and has his albums and saw him live back in the sixties. I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe they are connected a little closer than that. Who knows?
Anyway he's all over Inherent Vice. The character called the Saint makes me think of him. But what's even more interesting to me is that he sounds like he could be the inspiration for the Swede (is his name Sven?) In Mason and Dixon. I didn't mention that Merrell has alot of UFO mythology in his music or style or whatever. UFO references are all over M&D as well as a race of advanced ancient beings. Sven it turns out doesn't hail from Sweden but is the member of some strange race of Giants from the far far north. Also he is quite the axeman. Sounds like this Merrell guy who wields an axe of his own.
