My beloved father, Amos Oz, a wonderful family man, an author, a man of
peace and moderation, died today peacefully after a short battle with
cancer. He was surrounded by his lovers and knew it to the end. May his
good legacy continue to amend the world.

I was always moved by what I read of your work. Sometimes too much (my
cowardice). *My Michael* first, back when I was voracious to read and
therefore know everything. (In the feelingful sense of Babel's story). Yes,
you
would want to talk to Chekhov, as I would too. Yes, I now see why, maybe,
the elective affinity I didn't notice. Gossip, you say, which for you two
means profound insight into human beings in everyday situations. See that
Freud title alone. You might say, sorta did, that Chekhov raised gossip
to the level of literature earlier than just about anyone.
I would try to prompt Chekhov and were I now to get to talk to you, I would
prompt *with* Chekhov.

I know a woman you were involved with. She said you were a good man,
'sweet' and never "difficult". Unlike Donald Barthelme or Miles Davis. (She
was too beautiful and smart to not attract almost anyone she wanted.)

She once had a foursome lunch which included a quiet guy named Tom. Yes, it
was before Gravity's Rainbow--the other woman was Faith Sale--
and she only learned later who he had been.

Amos's daughter is an historian:

Democracies don’t fall because of active fanatics. They fall because of
lazy moderates.
