coffee in M & D and the present. Why so ubiquitous in M & D?

I recommend to all Plisters and M&D readers the coffee episode of the
How It Began: A HIstory of the Modern World podcast.

Offers a really fascinating depiction of coffee's relationship to
civilizational, scientific, political, cultural progress.

 Also notes that one reason coffee was so influential at the dawn of
the Age of Reason was that, before coffee came along, people living in
some of the more urbanized parts of Europe basically only drank booze
because the water was so terrible, and so were more or less hammered
constantly. One estimate suggests Parisians were drinking 7L of wine a
day.
