M&D notes problem

For what it's worth ...

I'm typing this message directly into a version of Gmail under an
institutional disguise, but the plain-text setting should be the same.
For longer messages, I often type into Notepad (on a PC: don't know if
there's an Apple equivalent) then cut and copy.
