Time. Chap 23 ends with the remark about time which Westerners feel. Just
read about Galway Kinnell's
constant poetic treatment of it. At the heart of the full awareness of time
is death, of course, as the Rev is always
saying which mercifully we are blind to, even with such remarks as
Emerson's
"Time is the space that may not be seen". Whatever, TRP buries a little
modern physics in Emerson's remark, yes?

Then Chap 33, we see the constant awareness of time the Gentlemen from
Philadelphia manifest, the Ben Franklins
of the new America, he of the organized daily self-improvement lists,
etc....all contrasted with the more leisurely
Marylanders.

When we think of what lies at the heart of time, we are slyly given a bit
of N.O. Brown and Weber back at us: in the West,
where we must 'examine for Productivity each of their waking Moments' we
are back to staring at the death wish at the heart
of time, at the heart of the Protestant Ethic.
