Pynchon and Roth

seems that that Upper West Side Jewish grocery and deli that is the one
surely featured in Pynchon's trailer for *Bleeding Edge*

is wonderfully written about in a page and a half of Philip Roth's *Operation
Shylock *of
1993. ...Just a bit of that writing is as satirical as Pynchon's trailer
scene, kind of a tease for it, one might say.

Where has this novel been all my Roth reading life? One I had missed and
unforgettable now when
it should have been a reread. As Harold the Blooming Flower said about *The
Crying of Lot 49, *after
one's first reading, one should immediately reread it. As richly convoluted
as the surface of the human brain, so to speak.
