Oh yes - "It Can’t Happen Here” (so titled out of satire) was written (1934) at a time when FDR’s programs didn’t seem to be working and WWII was still 7 years away.
In those days, there were a large number of people who wanted to nationalize the big industries (socialist) but who were also often virulently racist and anti-Semitic. At the same time many of them wanted to stay out of Europe’s issues.
Mussolini was definitely in power, but Hitler started his detention camps for Communists in 1933 expanded them to “undesirables” in 1934 and to death camps after 1939 when Germany, now under Hitler as "the Fuhrer,” invaded Poland.
It was very different for many reasons including all those things you listed.
