Not Heidi. I was thinking of:
"Where are you physically?" (p.406)
and,
"I'll be at the place. I can't guarantee an erection." (p.407)
Later, after Maxine finds Windust not only soft but inanimate, she has an Oedipa-like moment, when she realizes that the person she thought she was conversing with was already dead:
"So who was she talking to, back there in the DeepArcher oasis? If Windust, judging by the smell, was already long dead by then,
it gives her a couple of problematic choices- either he was speaking to her from the other side or it was an imposter and the link could
have been embedded by anybody, not necessarily a well-wisher, spooks, Gabriel Ice... Some random twelve-year old in California.
Why believe in any of it." [or as Trump might say, "some fat guy on a couch"- and don't think They haven't read and taken notes on BE]
Many levels of indeterminism here. The Indeterminate soft/hard-on as a symbol for the more encompassing blend of dead and alive. Our hero, me thinks, resists the temptation to foresake the reality of her instincts for a quantum-like indeterminism- an un-excluded middle ground- longed for by Oedipa. "So who was she talking to...?" might be the wrong question. But before she can answer, her train of thought is interrupted by a phone call reminding her that her children could be at stake.
Nevertheless, the bleeding continues. Quantum computing is becoming more real every day, and CRISPR is already here.
