Joseph,

I'm not on, nor have I ever been, on Facebook, are you? Have you ever been? I can't tell you what the experience of being on Facebook, or getting news from Facebook, is like. "Fake News" is a phrase that I'm most familiar with as a smear used by Donald Trump and his followers, which I believe control the majority of all elected offices in the US government, against any news organization at any time that disseminates any information that he and those in control of all branches of the US government do not like.

So, when this fellow (or you- it's difficult to discern from your post when you're quoting from the article(s) or speaking yourself) state:

"That a single corporation has such a monopoly over the flow of worldwide news is already problematic, but the increasing meshing of corporate and US government control over the means of communication is particularly worrying. All those who believe in the free and open exchange of information should oppose Facebook becoming a tool of U.S. foreign policy."

I presume you mean the US government controlled by Donald Trump and his allies, and the foreign policy so put forth? There is, so far, a difference between the institutions of government in the US and Russia, vis a vis, the chance, at least, for effective resistance to the hegemony of their respective regimes. Despite the control of all branches of the US government by Donald Trump and his allies, there is a chance that we will be able to recover from the damage he and his allies are doing in our name, to our institutions, and to all those seeking freedom from tyranny worldwide, via Facebook or otherwise.

There might be less chance of recovery from the impending environmental collapse caused in large part by heedless over-consumption, unbridled greed and the belief in unlimited resources on which the marriage of democracy and late capitalism seem so dependent.
