Why didn't anyone tell me that the Callery pear trees in BLEEDING EDGE stink!?

Only the females:
Female plants do not produce cones. Two ovules
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ovule> are formed at the end of a stalk, and
after pollination <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollination>, one or both
develop into seeds. The seed is 1.5–2 cm long. Its fleshy outer layer (the
sarcotesta <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcotesta>) is light
yellow-brown, soft, and fruit <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit>-like.
It is attractive in appearance, but contains butyric acid
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butyric_acid>[14]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginkgo_biloba#cite_note-14> (also known as
butanoic acid) and smells like rancid butter
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butter> or vomit[15]
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginkgo_biloba#cite_note-15> when fallen.
Beneath the sarcotesta is the hard sclerotesta
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sclerotesta> (the "shell" of the seed) and a
papery endotesta
<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Endotesta&action=edit&redlink=1>,
with the nucellus <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nucellus> surrounding the
female gametophyte <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gametophyte> at the
center.[16]
