Dear Listers,
There is so much in ANNIVERSARIES that can be quoted here for all thinking
Plisters.
Johnson--thru his narrator's observations and his writing craft --and not
usually a binary-- is so rich.
(i.e. the style is often the insightful observation enwrapped in its
expression).
I have so much to do that I can't post all I want to about Anniversaries
BUT, this tidbit on money and war below I cannot resist.
It is an historic American truth that all the money Johnson, was burning in
bombs to burn
Vietnamese was part of the measurable inflation and eventual need for the
US to leave
the gold standard. De Gaulle let the US know that IF France wanted to
redeem his gold holdings and started
an It's a Wonderful Life run on the US Treasury, the US was in trouble.
(Look up the historical inflation within the US chart online and see it
grab in late sixties).
The tidbit from Johnson is from his NYT anchoring. It said that the US
stepped up SELLING arms,
exporting arms to other nations in order to help reduce the trade
deficit!...
