An interesting moment today while researching Pynchon.
Among Pynchon diehards, it is fairly well-known that Pynchon's father was a
local GOP politician in midcentury New York.
However, I didn't know this: documents in the Nixon Presidential Library
show that Pynchon’s father actively campaigned for Nixon in 1960.
According to archival documentation, Thomas R. Pynchon Sr. appeared on
stage at a campaign event with then-Vice President Nixon at the Nassau
County courthouse in Mineola, New York on September 28, 1960 (“Itinerary of
Vice President Nixon: September 25 through October 1, 2960,” Box 46, Folder
13).
