Counterflying Against the Day

Chick Counterfly, the one Chum we learn of, read of, who was lifted from
his human earthly life into the Airship. What other
"Counter-" do we get in Pynchon? The Counterforce. Can we make any
connection?

Chick is, was, with his dad, a scrabbler; a guy ad-libbing (with his dad)
his workaday life. Chick eyes the apple fritter, which is all
he has a mind for when the talk is turning philosophical. Chick is Southern
American, right? Chick is the American of hand-to-mouth.
A preterite or almost? (before he becomes a Chum)? Is his ascension from
the human to "another world, but like this one". From human
to more-than-human? (Nietzsche).
