Just a tidbit from the NY Times journaling, a constant refrain, as
mentioned:
in early November 1967, 59% of Americans, sez Gallup, is for the Vietnam
War.
Gallup as a barometer of opinion is another anchoring device for Johnson.
In another
example of his depth, therefore an overarching doubting irony re Gallup,
his protagonist details the Times story about how the count
of citizens in the US is probably low, noticeably so, most of the missing
number made up of Negroes, it is judged.
In this month the number of Americans hits 200 million, with a ceremony by
politicians.
Within a week or so, a cop will be quoted in the Times saying he *wanted to*
ram the crowd of war protestors.
A father from Tulsa, Oklahoma is quoted as disowning his anti-war son.
