John Bailey - that’s  a sad tale, but matches what I’ve heard from other Austin-based musicians and journalists who encountered him over the years.  There was the inflection point in 1990 when that God-sent producer, Bill Bentley - supported by the likes of Michael Stipe and others - rescued him both from oblivion and from his own mental health challenges.  He seems to have had a care giving team for the last few decades.  There notoriously are a lot of plane crashes in Rock history, but occasionally the art form has taken care of its own.

I was lucky (??) enough to interview him in 2011 and he was not in a
good way, mental health-wise. I don't think there was a single
coherent sentence in the interview and he was clearly in quite a lot
of distress. It was extremely sad but at the same time he went on
stage an hour later and delivered a great set. He was also surrounded
by people who clearly had his back. RIP big guy.
