The discovery of coal seams, the accumulation of past energy, sparked a
frenzy of exploitation. “In the abstract, mankind entered into the
possession of a capital inheritance more splendid than all the wealth of
the Indies,” Lewis Mumford observes in his masterwork Technics and
Civilization. But like “a drunken heir on a spree”, industrialists began
burning through humanity’s bequest.
