in *Democracy and Truth *by Sophia Rosenfeld, an excellent book I recommend
without reservation, She footnotes a reference to Al Gore's book and movie
"*An Inconvenient Truth" *by saying he cribbed it from Max Weber and cites
his other most famous essay, "Science as a Vocation" wherein he refers to
"inconvenient facts" as ones that are inconvenient for "party opinions" [in
which party
seems to refer to something larger than a political party. Maybe, knowers
of German and English
on this list, there is a different, better word?}  ]

We virtually know for certain, Pynchon must have read this essay.
