This is a really great read, thanks Mark. I agree with some parts and take
issue with others, but that's also the tone of the review itself, which is
both critical and generous.
On the topic of The Bomb, by coincidence I read this week John Hersey's
Hiroshima in book form, though I've noticed it's available for free online.
Absolute must-read for anyone who hasn't. Very short, but it continues to
amaze me how the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki exist so thoroughly for
us as abstract notions without our knowing the lived details of those who
went through it. Hersey delivers a wealth of those, although I've just
ordered some writing from Japanese survivors who provide even more nuanced
testimonials.
