“Krazy Katwas not conceived, not born, it jes' grew” ~ George Herriman
A couple of sources mentionthat quote. I’ll post a link below.
Shortly before someone firstbrought up the idea of the Mumbo Jumbo read, I purchased the 2016 bio “Krazy:The Black and White World of George Herriman” by Michael Tisserand. I stillhaven’t read it. I had assumed Herriman got “jes’ grew” from James WeldonJohnson but do not see his name in the index. “Jes Grew” is also not in theindex. Ishmael Reed and “Mumbo Jumbo” get a brief mention. I don’t know when orfrom what interview Herriman made that statement.
I’m following the MJJGread. Like a few others, I went ahead and finished and started over to followalong. I might start the Herriman bio while still reading MJ. I’m also reading theFantagraphics Krazy and Ignatz series.
“Listen, I came up in Temecula, which is Krazy Kat Kountry, where you always root for Ignatz and not OffisaPup.”Everyone here knows KrazyKat is referenced in Inherent Vice. There is a Krazy Kat comic on Doc’s fridgein the movie.
