Upper West Siders don't listen. Once again, Pynchon a genius: knew social distancing like a prophet. You can bet he was home, just around the corner.

The main problem for NY is that both the state and city governments are
staffed by utter hacks - incompetent and/or corrupt career bureacrats who
rose to their positions by blaming underlings for their mistakes (at least
that was my experience working at the Medical Examiner's Office and dealing
with assorted agencies as a citizen). Basically, Cuomo and De Blasio will
tell them to jump and they'll sit there, clueless. I hope to god I'm being
too cynical and that they'll actually rise to the occasion. With Trump at
the helm, the Federal government is obviously not going to help. So, full
speed ahead because there's no way out. I have to admit, I'm very scared.
