Goes out for Jochen, who led me to finally read him. This is real fine on
*Norwood,* one I "liked' even better than *True Grit* and even* Dog of the
South* (although I think both are 'better', richer books.) Reading
*Norwood* after *True Grit* and after some early comic Roth, including his
famous essay on how 'crazy' even in the early sixties was modern American
society just struck me. *Norwood* embodies what Roth found with his
examples in that essay, I suggest. And Portis embodies the way thinking
can be "crazy" , a real logic from felt but damaged, oblique premises.
But not only for that reason but to share this surely only-personal
connection. Starting to read* Vineland *again, the beginning of *Norwood*,
probably illogically, probably in a Portis way flashed in my mind as I
followed the crazy logic of *Vineland's* opening anew. In no way am I
suggesting any kind of influence only that the best comic novels
are often alike in patterned ways, and I know there are other comic works
*Vineland* is kin to.
Speaking of which, do we think that the loggers motif in early *Vineland*
is at all Pynchon playing with the loggers in* Sometimes A Great Notion? *
