I loved her first novel before I could even spell "hysterical. What a
London! What a world. Wood has to write another essay on when "hysterical
realism" is tautological.

I’ve always loved Zadie Smith’s response to the famous review of her first
novel, in which James Wood coined the term “hysterical realism”: she
thought he had a point. It helped her grow as a writer. Real thoughtful
criticism can help a real thoughtful writer.
