I read about 1/4 of it today.  It is very consciously a work of art, but it
is relentlessly a downer.  The narrator is very sophisticated, but very
depressed.  It seems to be an extended study in guilt re. oppression of
native Canadians, told in oblique personal stories with many sexual
obsessions.  I can see why it wasn't well received.  I don't deny the art,
but it can become oppressive.
