The review suggests problematic views that make this not such a surprise - like Mailer, perhaps, Roth’s oeuvre (and private life) imho
went back and forth across some lines that
are still being clarified. That protégé of
Mailer’s, Jack Henry Abbott, helped to
clarify what not to do!
David Foster Wallace also springs to mind, &
that Oscar Wao guy Junot
Diaz, & for that matter, Jack Kerouac & even
Salinger, not to mention Californication - the mostly pernicious
myth of the hard drinking oversexed author whose
wild life informs his fiction & whose oeuvre
excuses his misdeeds, & whose example
inspires young authors, needs serious retooling,
doesn’t it?
Bailey will never be the luminary Roth was &
hence is excusable of less -
but he was also apparently more flagrant.

Unfortunately, Bailey's been #metoo'd:

with reason, apparently. which makes it all the more unfortunate.
the publisher is "pausing" distribution & PR for the book, and he was fired
by his agents.
