Maxine definitely attracted to this guy Slagiatt.
Reg has confirmed that she has a firearm-type weapon of some sort, and she
sends her kid to Krav Maga. With that and the Deseret fascination and the
choice of profession as Investigator, for which the ACFE lists desired
characteristics as
*Abilities*
Attention to detail
Functions in stressful situations
Alert to surroundings
Understands associated risks
Honest
Sound judgment
High integrity
Responsible
Strong judge of character
All this puts her in the PI mode and, unlike Oedipa Maas who is just
beginning to investigate, she’s a seasoned pro who enjoys her work.
Badinage with a possible baddie - and Slagiatt doesn’t seem entirely bad,
in fact a lot of it may be an act, testing her mettle & so forth - all part
of the gig for her.
That she goes to work for him I lay at the door of Horst, who set her up
with so many dubious clients that her ACFE oaths may have receded back a
bit.
Eric Outfield running scared; Reg maybe soon just running. He feels like
New York is the escape & Seattle is where he should’ve been all along.
Hudson Valley & NYC is such a lovely place. Hate that name “Empire State”
though.
New York is called "The Empire State" because of its wealth and variety of
resources. This nickname appeared on New York license plates from 1951
through the mid-1960s. In 2001, "The Empire State" legend returned to New
York license plates.
If that isn’t a fscking (old computer fake-cuss) harbinger!
Either of these wd be far better, wouldn’t they? - The Excelsior State
This nickname comes from the motto of New York; "Excelsior." New York's
motto means "ever upward."
The Knickerbocker State
This nickname comes from the pants worn by early Dutch settlers in New
York. "Knickerbocker" is a German term made up of two words. "Knicker"
means box and "bock" is a male goat. This term was promoted in Washington
Irving's character, Diedrich Knickerbocker in "Knickerbocker History of New
York."
March Kelleher & her red hair and snoods would probably agree.
