NP: I won't even go into espionage charges except to say I believe in the rule of international law

True. As far as I can tell, we are beyond the "democracy is
threatened"-scenario. Our new government here in Germany has announced a
foreign policy based on "values". I am sure they will be very vocal
about human rights violations in Belarus or China. And rightfully so. I
am also sure that there will not be a peep about Julian Assange.

Everything is subordinated to geopolitical objectives aka the objectives
of Empire. Frank Zappa once memorably stated:

“The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to
continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too
expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will
pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the
way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.”

The Assange affair is part of moving the tables and chairs out of the way.
