I think Laura’s interpretation is a positive, but valid, spin on the
meaning of “against all reason.”  A more literal interpretation of
believing something not supported by any valid reason would fit with a
definition of paranoia: Supra-Reasonal.  But Laura’s “instinct” fits,
depending on this context, because we readers see more than this character
can, and he is correct.
