This memory just surfaced after my apology by another name. Hope it was OK
enough, Joseph.
The way the mind works.....
We all know how fiercely Bob knew what he was doing almost all the time.
Got to places for each song, each album that felt right
in the deepest sense mostly (of course some songs, albums failed; he never
looked back, took risks, fuck the dogs on his heels, the caravan moves
on)---where felt encompasses the mind, the emotions, the mind's eye,
his performance habits, his historical sense of the music of every
song---since I have no connection to playing music of any kind, this
keeps amazing me--and more. it was hard to convince him some bit of music
should be different--unless you had been composing it with him
from the beginning sometimes.
So, it is the oughts of the 2000nds sometime. Johnny Cash has been circling
the drain, everyone preparing that he would die soon [he didn't. he
recovered then as you may know] Someone
has produced a TV Special for Johnny, a Tribute, don't remember who and I
was excited because I had recently gotten a working TV after a couple
decades without. I wanted to see Bob again.
I do not remember if Bob was first, all has blurred, but this happened:
The Show cut to a big screen above the live stage set where some played to
Bob, piped in from Woodstock, I think, or another studio of his. Bob's back
is to us right in front of his band. He turns quickly
and says, "John, remember that time we differed in Nashville; I just want
to tell you you were right".....Chlls up the skin. A great TV moment.
I have often thought about what he meant, Joseph and Thomas and anyone, any
ideas? He must have been referring to the Nashville Skyline album, where
they do that duet---but John and he must have talked
other of the songs on it, right? --of *Girl From the North Country* which
has that kind of double ending with "true love of mine", which I have now
thought John had said something like, "a dead stop, not that doubling,
Bob'.....
but who knows?
Maybe tomorrow morning, I'll tell another story about a time I was
somewhere over something Bobby. Not as good but good because it is Bob...
