That a book about the failure of education would be hailed as a teaching
tool might have amused Adams. But the* Education* is certainly an American
jeremiad. It warns of unlimited, immeasurable power that will be unleashed
in the twentieth century, far exceeding anyone’s ability to control it. For
politics is only the “systematic organization of hatreds,” and “practical
politics consists in ignoring facts.”
