Was there talk of a BE read?

THINKING OUT LOUD in response to David's reasonable questions

There are 41 chapters, 478 pages. most between 6 and 13 pages; ch 10 and 38 have 16 pages; 40, 41, 14 and 37 have 15 pages 34 has 18 pages( halloween )

With my original proposal of 4 days per chapter the general pace is 3-4 pages a day. We can stretch the 6 chapters with 15 to 16 pags to 5 days and ch 34 to 6 days……. OOPs ,WAIT A MINUTE

For me at least, that is still way too slow 136 days of 4 day chapters 30 days of 5 day chapters and 6 days for ch 34 . 172 DAYS? (5 and 1/2 months seems far too much time for this book to me)

if we average 8 pages a day we read the book in 2 months. ( Most chapters in 2 days) That seems a much better pace to retain interest. I think anything more than 2.5 months with breaks for holidays is too much. But I’m ready to let a quorum decide.

So lets vote on this A) 4 days per chapter ( 5 months) B) 2 days per chapter ( 2 months) C) 7 Pages a day( about 2.5 months I do think we should organize reading by chapters to keep the flavor of Pynchon's decisions about dividing the action.

I will be happy to break this up into a schedule according to what people want.

Also lets see who is up for taking chapters? how many. Any ideas on drawing in a larger group? I would love to see maybe an effort to reach younger readers ?

When I start, I’ll just be aware of what the schedule is supposed to look like (If someone EVER posts a schedule), and I will jump in with whatever I’ve got, from wherever I am at the moment. That sounds like the kind of anarchy Mark might like.

Previous group reads here used page numbers because chapters were nonexistent. But that’s for someone else to figure out for now.

You disagreed and insisted on your time frame. I did not continue the argument but went with the plan and was one of the last participants as interest disappeared. I still do not know for certain that I was right about the pace being the problem or part of the problem but since Mike Weaver(I think) was interested in BE at same time as I was reading it I suggested a group read with a faster paced schedule. I also said we should be open to slow it if there was more that people had to say on a given chapter/segment. I was not surprised at your disagreement but since no one else had your concern I felt hopeful to start when Michael expressed interest. You are welcome to join and even slow the pace down through active participation. I feel we have all read the book and are ready for a discussion driven, topic driven, text drive consideration that is bit more free ranging, but it is really up to how people participate. I do not want to override and am not a natural organizer but simply thought to move along at a pace that keeps people involved and see if that works any better to keep interest and participation.

My idea was to move faster than we usually do, no concern about spoilers, more holistic, just leaving the floor open for new input as we move along. More about digesting and understanding what we can about the novel, and testing ideas against text than than a finegrained study.
> > How about we start with 4 days per chapter and if that is not working make adjustments. If people go deeper into sentence by sentence, or a particular sentence/paragraph/pattern we stretch the 4 days to fit the interest. If someone wants to go back to an earlier segment just do it. Also looking in the archives as we move along might be fun. Suggestion:The audible version moves right along if people have a hard time making time to read. Each host can decide where their focus lies and others can add. I was in a group read of ATD called Chumps of Choice where each host of the segment did a minimal summary. quite nice IMO. I will also be putting out at the beginning a list of most characters with description and key story roles. More through than the Pynchon wiki, I think.
