All in all, it’s a promising beginning.

Meh was my summary of my Vyrva-less summary - not of the chapter.

As Joseph begged to differ, I defend it a little: divorced mom, employee
bringing marital strife into the office, dissatisfying job parameters,
oddball school. Sure, you could build on that, but Vyrva immediately builds
Maxine into someone who shares with a friend. Maybe a slight bit of
mentoring too. Gives me a lot more hope to see Maxine rise above the
negatives. As with the street corner “pick,” she’s playing offense.
