Orthodox Jewishness is flooding Netflix these days, for some reason, and
it’s an interesting view into a world that is mostly forbidden to even
watch TV, and never to go near the internet. Here are the three shows I’m
watching (and this doesn’t include “Losing Alice” on Apple TV, not about
the Orthodox, but all in Hebrew & set in Jerusalem):
1. “Shtisel ” - Netflix sez “ A Haredi family living in an ultra-Orthodox
neighborhood of Jerusalem reckons with love, loss and the doldrums of daily
life.”
Basically an extended family sit-com about Orthodox life’s many conundrums
of modern life. A very foreign world. All Yiddish and Hebrew.

2. “Orthodox”. - Netflix sez: “ Hasidic Jewish woman in Brooklyn flees
to Berlin from an arranged marriage and is taken in by a group of musicians
— until her past comes calling.”
Leaving the cult of an Hasidic community isn’t easy. Seriously not easy.

3. “One of Us”. - Netflix sez: In the wake of trauma and abuse, three
Hasidic Jews face ostracism, anxiety and danger as they attempt to leave
their ultra-Orthodox community.
Documentary about a few ex-Hasidic Jews from NYC trying to start new lives
in their early 20s or 30s having just about no real school education or
practical skills, with a very hostile ex-religious and very cultish
family and community.
