We know from circumstantial evidence, I think---that is we don't "know'
 just see it as likely that Thomas Pynchon listened
to the radio drama *The Shadow* and was influenced in creative ways.

Well, Maddow just had a short segment on radio plays, including *The Shadow*
leading with *Johnny Dollar * with "the action-packed expense
account". Evidently the premise is that Johnny's expenses when presented to
the insurance company he works for, tell the story. The seeds
of Maxine in *Bleeding Edge*? or a seed?
