NP but a book recommendation. Maybe esp for Joseph who was recently asking. Afterlives by the new Nobelist, Abdulrazak Gurnah, just received (from England!)

A moslem community finds work for a bright boy [from Zanzibar implicitly]
that leads to
a job on mainland Africa. As the Germans break the various resistances and
steadily consolidate their colonization-- presented
as a fact of life while a powerful businessman takes over the lives of
many--the man our protagonist
works for.....I detect a fierce internal metaphor for that colonization.

Barely begun, fyi.
