Well, no - there’s no Traverses or Chums of Chance in it -

But this passage in AtD, to which the redoubtable Mike Jing guided our
attention -

P651.23-29 . . . yet she couldn’t see her luck as other than purchased in
the worn unlucky coin of all those girls
who hadn’t kept coming back, who’d gone down before their time, Dixies and
Fans and Mignonettes, too fair to be alone, too crazy for town, ending
their days too soon in barrelhouses, in shelters dug not quite deep enough
into the unyielding freeze of the hillside, for the sake of boys too
stupefied with their own love of exploding into the dark, . . .

- could segue into Maxine’s reminiscences of her nightclub cohort:

“Not everybody benefits from a misspent youth. Teen contemporaries of
Maxine’s got lost in the club toilets of the eighties, went in, never
came out, some with luck grew too hip or not hip enough to appreciate
the scene at all, others, like Maxine, went on only to flash back to
it now and then, epileptigogic lighting, Quaaludes for sale on the
floor, outer-borough hair statements . . . the Aqua Net fogs! The
girl-hours lost sitting in front of mirrors! The strange disconnects
between dance music and lyrics, “Copacabana,” “What a Fool Believes,”
heartbreaking stories, even tragic, set to these strangely bouncy
tunes . . . .

“ and next thing you’re in your purse looking for tissues because it’s
all gone, of course, another of those expulsions on out into a colder
season, where not everybody made it through, there was AIDS and crack
and let’s not forget late fuckin capitalism, so only a few really
found refuge of any kind . . . “

- or to Hector’s “who was saved?” in VL, or that illusive picnic, also
in VL, where the fortunate few survivors calmly recap the demise of
PR3 while drinking white wine and eating crab cakes, attended by
young maidens or something (heck that’s me reading VL, give or take a
few maidens & other necessary or desirable mutati mutandi)
