To be described as becoming mineralized like a statue in a park, yes, that
could seem degrading.
But also that his features are strong and handsome, (like those von Trapps
in “The Sound of Music”) and would make a good statue?
Looking at the context, Khäutsch is not such a terrible guy. His theory,
which he shares with Lew during the intermission, that grey eminences (the
Koch Brothers of Austria-Hungary) had imported Jack the Ripper to kill the
putative heir Rudolf in Mayerling, thus making Frank Ferdinand succeed
instead, and also making FF aware that his empery & even his survival were
conditional on being chauvinistic, tolerant of corruption, militaristic,
and anti-Semitic, is interesting. And advances the idea that Khäutsch
himself would have much preferred Rudolf and his progressive ideas.
(Werfner and Neville & Nigel use their dubiety as to this theory to advance
the idea of multiple universes in only some of which was JtR the Mayerling
killer.)
