And it is more than reductive binary thinking, a crucial oeuvre-long theme
of Pynchon's it often is
Thinking Revenge, as Pynchon knew best in Gravity's Rainbow. A way of
foreign policy "thinking"
that wants revenge on a bad country so much that it can't see straight
about other countries.
Or changes or other things in that country.

It is so revealing. Ressentiment so deep and pervasive the mind and eyes
are self-condemned. Read Stirner
and Nietzsche on this if one cares to. Or Lewis's Self-Condemned, Lewis not
unlike Pynchon.
So often as Nietzsche, Pynchon and Roth knew best, fierce
fundamentalist-like religious beliefs (or upbringing)
create the soil of sheep and goats---American Puritanism, for example, in
my face again as I read and teach Roth.
