Maxine to March:

“sometimes I’ll sit and fantasize, what it would’ve been like, a girl.”

“So? go have one, you’re still just a kid.”

“Yeah, problem is, so is Horst and everybody I’ve dated since.”

“Oh, you should have seen my ex. Sidney. Disturbed adolescents
from around the country would show up on pilgrimages just to inhale his
secondhand smoke and stay calibrated.”

         “He’s still . . .”

“Still kicking. He ever passes, it’s gonna be such a rude surprise
for him.”

         “You’re in touch?”

“More than I would like, he lives out on the Canarsie line with
some 12-year-old named
            Sequin.”

    “He gets to sees Tallis?”

“I think there’s a restraining order dating back a couple years
from when Sid started hanging around in the street under their window with
a tenor sax and playing this old rock ’n’ roll she used to like, and of
course Ice put the kibosh on that quick enough”

A) there’s that “12 year old” reference like the one Maxine made to
Justin’s partner Lucas about the young girlfriend he had just dumped and
whom Maxine had comforted in the ladies’ room
- hyperbole for effect, but she’s young

B) the 12 year old named Sequin - okay, now that name matches up with the
Sequin in Chuy’s Hideaway. I erroneously wrote that Sequin was someone off
of whom March was trying to score drugs. But she was twitting Sid about the
age of his lady friend. “At the library or something, working on a book
report?”

C) Sid is something of a wildman, I knew that. The particulars here are
interesting:

- Such a stoner of renown that “Disturbed adolescents…would show up on
pilgrimages just to inhale his secondhand smoke and stay calibrated”
(Like the shamans who drink the urine of someone who ate those mushrooms up
in Lapland)

- played oldtime rock’n’roll sax under Tallis’s window after she married
Ice, until the restraining order.
